High Meadow 8th graders, led by science teacher Gian Ascione, had another opportunity to BE SCIENTISTS this month, participating in a regional project to collect and exchange scientific measurements from a 150-mile portion of the Hudson River, from NY Harbor to Troy Dam. 

The student-gathered data will be compiled to create a “day-in-the-life” snapshot of the river for sharing with scientists from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Columbia University, and the Cary Institute of Ecosystems Studies. 

Members of Gian’s academic elective course on Pond Ecology also had the chance to work with a professional scientist from Bard College after an 8th grader found an unusual bacteria right here in the HMS pond! 

Just yesterday, 3rd grade got in on the action, collecting macroinvertebrates at the Kripplebush Stream under the guidance of Martha Cheo of the Hudson Riverkeepers’ Association. Their findings will be used for stream quality assessments in partnership with the DEC and project WAVE (Water Assessments by Volunteer Evaluators).
