This month, Sean Whalen joins our growing physical education program as PE Teacher for all grade levels.

Sean grew up here in Stone Ridge, attending Marbletown Elementary (where his father teaches math) and Rondout High School. At Rondout, he was captain of the lacrosse team, and also played soccer.

Sean continued his education at St. Bonaventure University in New York, where he captained the soccer team, and continued his lacrosse career.

He earned BA in Physical Education (K-12), with a focus on adventure education. His training helped him appreciate the importance of teaching not only sports skills, but also how physical activity promotes lifelong health and wellbeing.

“In conjunction with a good health program,” Sean says, physical education can “help kids recognize the link between being active and staying healthy.”

At HMS, he hopes to incorporate lifelong activities such as cross-country skiing, hiking, and yoga.

In the tradition of Bill Brantmeyer, who directs our Athletic Program, Sean will continue to emphasize cooperative games and critical thinking in his teaching, helping students develop strategy and planning skills.

When he’s not at school, you might find Sean playing in a mixed-age soccer league in Marbletown, or come winter, out on the slopes.
