Before we departed for our mid-winter break, we completed the literature study of the Collier Brothers’ Revolutionary War novel, My Brother Sam is Dead. The 7th graders were given a choice of three different questions ahead of time, and then on Wednesday, they spent most of our class time constructing a written response (3-4 short paragraphs) that showed their comprehension of the novel as well as their developing writing skill and style. These extended in-class writing opportunities develop students’ stamina, deep-thinking abilities, and are excellent practice for all types of writing – both assigned projects and those that spring forth from personal motivation. I look forward to reading all of their hard work and gaining new perspectives on this tried-and-true piece of historical fiction.
