Dear High Meadow Community,

In my long career in education, I’ve tried many approaches to making a difference for children. I’ve worked in public school administration, served as a school improvement specialist for the state of New Jersey, started a school, taught aspiring leaders at a university, and had a private practice.

I’ve experienced successes in each of these roles, but never before have I really felt I belonged to the kind of learning community that I have found at High Meadow, or that I was part of something as profound as I am here.

At this time of reflection on the year, I want to thank you all for making this feel like the place I am supposed to be. Everyday, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with and beside adults and children who are bright and open to new ways of thinking.

As my colleague Corinna has put it, High Meadow is a place where we can celebrate what makes us different, without a feeling that we need to change. We can be fully ourselves and get the work done. As my grandson has put it, High Meadow is a place where you can find what you love, do what you love, and no one will laugh at you.

All the while, we know how special this place is, and are intentional in protecting this as a sacred space for exploration and connection. Even as they are here, students recognize this as a second home, and value it. They can face challenges, because they know they are supported, and because they feel safe.

All of these are the reasons my husband can’t convince me to retire! There are so many exciting things to look forward to at High Meadow in 2019. For one, we continue to welcome new students to our school, and have just announced that enrollment is open for our Toddler Program, beginning in January.

I look forward to returning to High Meadow in the New Year for the inaugural ArtsAlive!, an Upper School showcase of performing and visual arts, for the Variety Show, 7th and 8th grade play, Bright Ideas, Fiesta Latina, and did you hear? This summer, the circus is coming to High Meadow!

Again, thank you for your open, welcoming spirit and your daily participation on and off campus. Each of you helps make High Meadow School the creative, nurturing, inclusive community I have the privilege to experience as both grandparent and school leader.

May the coming year bring you health and happiness.

With gratitude,
Susan
