The High Meadow School campus is situated on Main Street in Stone Ridge, New York, a small historic hamlet dotted with locally owned businesses and Dutch stone and Victorian style homes. The town’s recent restoration of its bluestone sidewalks allows students and families to easily walk to the library, local food establishments, the Community Center or Marbletown’s Center for the Arts.
High Meadow sits on 9 acres which are set back from this main street. Just beyond the front fence is one of the playing fields and just beyond that is the 19th century brick manse that is the Main Building. The Main Building houses the administrative offices and the lower grades of Pre Kindergarten thru 2nd grade.
Next to the Main Building is the second structural addition to the campus affectionately called the Nest. The Nest houses the Early Education Program students as well as students in 3rd and 4th grades. Further along is the newest structural addition to the campus called the Barn. The Barn houses the upper school and the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
These 3 buildings comprise a circle within which is the main playground. The main playground contains play structures and areas on a inched mulched bed.
Beyond the outer edge of buildings, encircling the entire campus is the Sacagawea Trail and Bird Sanctuary. Much emphasis is put on this natural world in both student play and academic endeavors.
The Garden: The organic garden at High Meadow School was an outgrowth of our commitment to cultivating the future stewards of the earth through both engagement with the natural world and a commitment to science teaching that integrates content, action, and the use of the scientific method. The garden was begun through our Science Out-Of-The-Box Program in the upper school, in which students get to study sciences outside of the classroom curriculum. Now it is tended by all students and their teachers and functions as an outdoor classroom in which students experiment, make observations and learn cooking from the garden methods. At harvest time, the garden supplements snack for the whole school!
Po-Po Village: Over the course of years, our students have built a village in the woods surrounding the campus. This is a village in which students create the structures from found materials, make the rules and have the freedom to pretend.
To maintain a harmonious campus, the entire High Meadow School community works hard to maintain the gardens and fields, imbue the school community with respect and a sense of responsibility for the school environs and we build strong relationship skills that allow students to effectively communicate and play, whether on the playground or in the classroom.
