high meadow's history

In 1984 a group of parents, guided by founder Mimi Labourdette, came together to envision a school that would embody progressive principles of education in a setting that would engage the students with the astounding environment of the Shawangunk Mountains. High Meadow School emerged out of this dream, opening at the Brook Farmhouse at the foot of the Shawangunk Ridge.

The school eventually outgrew the farmhouse and moved to the other side of the mountains, to a nine acre property in the heart of Stone Ridge. The campus is composed of a 150 year old brick manse that serves administration and classes PK through eighth grade. “The Nest” houses our third and fourth grade, as well as tutoring and after school programs. Our Upper School houses our fifth through eighth grades, music rooms, and the Performing Arts and Athletic Center. Winding around the property is our Sacagawea nature trail and bird sanctuary.

While we have grown, we have maintained our small school feeling through small class sizes of an average of 15 students with a teacher and assistant. We maintain our feeling of community through inter-age activities such as weekly gatherings, reading partners, and community service projects.
