Math

At High Meadow School our students learn to approach math with a balance of skill, curiosity, and higher level thinking. Our approach and curriculum encourages our students’ desire to know why.

In grades k-4 we use the Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (CSMP), as well as a variety of support materials and activities that stress both Mathematical thinking and language as well as arithmetic skill. Students are exposed to integers and irrational numbers early on through story problems, they develop logic, reasoning, and spatial thinking through the use of mathematical tools.

As the students enter the fifth grade they launch into algebra and more complex geometric principles. With a firm foundation of both arithmetic and higher math in place, all of our students follow an advanced math course. After an immersion into geometry in the beginning of the year, our seventh graders begin Integrated Algebra, and continue this course through eighth grade. This is the one curriculum area at HMS that follows the New York State Standards for ninth grade mathematics. This gives our students an advantage as they enter high school, opening the opportunity to take the advanced math course.
