high meadow's philosophy

High Meadow School is an independent, not-for-profit school serving children from Pre-kindergarten through eighth grades. We adhere to four basic principles of progressive education:

Teaching the Whole Child requires a curriculum that provides age appropriate challenge and engages the child physically, creatively, and intellectually. Through this approach children are encouraged to take initiative and gain ownership over their learning and creative process.

Teacher as Researcher: The teacher is the researcher in the classroom and adjusts and hones curriculum and methods to best educate the children in her classroom. She creates an environment in which children can become experts through deep investigation into material, processes, and ideas.

Democracy: The primary purpose of education in a democratic society is to nurture active participants in democracy. Therefore staff members and classes work together to solve problems, to build tolerance for differences, and to make choices.

Community: The school ought to be a reflection of the community in which it resides. Therefore High Meadow is committed to maintaining as low a rate of tuition as possible. To make this possible, we all pitch in: High Meadow families commit a minimum of 25 hours to community service to the school, bringing their interests and talents to create an enriched learning community.

Mission Statement: Since its founding in 1984, the teachers and students of High Meadow School have been creating a learning community that is inclusive, tolerant, and strives to prepare students to be contributors and problem solvers in a diverse society. High Meadow School honors the unique approach to learning inherent in each child. We offer a challenging curriculum that engages students artistically, intellectually and socially, and nurtures the development of life long learning skills through inquiry, interaction, and creative initiative.

* At High Meadow School we observe each child so that we might understand his/her rate of development and approach to learning.

* We organize the program and classrooms to encourage students to exercise choice and to explore areas of particular interest, and extend their own learning.

* We believe that learning is a physical and creative activity. Thus, we offer a rich program in which academic, artistic, physical, and social skills are all valued and brought to bear on the learning process.
